Synergy - Conversations on Brian Swimme's

Powers of the Universe

with Margie Gillis, SC, MA and Bernice Vetter, SC, MPS

“Ever more advanced forms of complexity depend on cooperation, collaboration and working together” says Brian Swimme about this 6th power in his DVD series, Powers of the Universe, that we have presented over these past few years.

During this crucial time, many of us are yearning for suggestions about doing just that in order to be more in alignment with the greater powers that exist in our universe. “Positive synergy is a mutually-enhancing relationship.” (Swimme).

Let us come together to view, to learn and to grow in SYNERGY.

“Powers of the Universe” is a ten part video series designed by mathematical cosmologist Brian Swimme.  Each of the ten powers takes us on a fascinating journey that has been active since the beginning of time and active in all of us. Each power also offers amazing insights that will forever change how you think about being human.

Margie Gillis, SC, MA lives by the sea on Cape Breton Island. She grew up in a small coal mining town, a “company town” as they are known. Coal influenced her life, as did the sea.

Margie has a BEd from Mt. Saint Vincent University in Halifax and an MA in Environmental Studies from York University, Toronto. Her early labour was in church ministry but later, she was drawn to community development work after seeing the effects of the neo-liberal economic agenda on small rural communities in Eastern Canada in the 1980’s and 90’s. She was very active in the potential to re-invent local communities after severe economic decline using what Otto Scharmer refers to as “architectures of connection”, that is, the establishment of community-based initiatives to gather folks in their efforts to re-think and re-new their communities. She was the Director of the Carmel Centre project in New Waterford incubating small businesses, encouraging community leadership, and active in efforts to establish a medical centre focusing on community issues of health and wellness.

She is a member of the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax. In this last third of her life, she spends her time studying the new spirituality, growing a garden, and caring for her 95-year-old mother, all the while continuing to live by the sea.

Bernice Vetter, SC, MPS - Initially Bernice taught high school and after 15 years she acquired her post graduate degree in Pastoral Studies. Currently she is a spiritual care and counselling specialist, primarily with Psychiatric patients and clients. She has been participating in Sacred Circle Dance and in international workshops since 1995 and has been the facilitator of the Edmonton group for 18 years, thereby achieving an integrated and work play balance. For many years she has pursued the work of Brian Swimme, Thomas Berry and Ilia Delio among others who interpret the New Story as the only viable worldview for today. To that end, she has also become experienced in hosting workshops, especially through the medium of the Zoom platform.
